Summary
This criterion-referenced, curriculum-based instrument is designed for use by bilingual education teachers and speech/language pathologists. It can be used to determine children's learning needs and in developing instructional programs. It can be used to assess the structural and functional aspects of communication, and a variety of listening and speaking skills. A management system is included to maintain an ongoing record of performance as children progress from kindergarten through the third grade.
The inventory is organized into three components: criterion-referenced assessment of Spanish communication; assessment of Spanish speech sound production; and communication sampling and the identification of communicative disorders. The instrument is designed for use with children aged three to eight. Older children who demonstrate significant delays in language development may be assessed with the use of this instrument. The instrument is available in English and Spanish.
Individual, direct administration of structured tasks with target child is required. Observation, and interview with people who have frequent opportunities to observe the child in natural speaking contexts, is necessary for meaningful result. Fluent speakers of the Spanish language, under the guidance of a speech-language pathologist, should administer the tool.
