Bilingual Language Proficiency Questionnaire

Mattes, L. J., & Santiago, G. (English/Spanish edition) (1985); Mattes, L. J., & Nguyen, L. (English/Vietnamese edition)( 1996). Bilingual Language Proficiency Questionnaire. Oceanside, CA: Academic Communication Associates.

Summary
A parent interview communication profile designed for use in the speech and language assessment of children (ages 0 - 8 years) who speak the Spanish or Vietnamese language. Articulation, language, voice, fluency, and the pragmatic aspects of communication are examined. Items are listed in both the English and Spanish or English and Vietnamese languages, which can be helpful in determining the language that is most appropriate for the child's instructional program.

Speech-language pathologists, bilingual education teachers, and other education professionals who are fluent speakers of the Spanish or Vietnamese language will find this instrument useful in eliciting information from the adult who is most familiar with the child's language development. It can be used to obtain information about the child's effectiveness in using language to describe events, express feelings, request information, and various other speaking purposes; and determine appropriate educational placements for those children. To be used in conjunction with data obtained from formal tests, tape-recorded communication samples, observations in the classroom, and various other measures to perform a comprehensive analysis.
