Dear Visitors:
Federal funding for this website ended in 2003, therefore few materials have been added since that time. Fortunately, there is continued interest in culturally and appropriate materials, curriculum, and programs. Because of this, we have allowed this site to remain as an archive. Developmental Indicators for the Assessment of Learning (DIAL-3)

Mardell-Czudnowski, C., & Goldenberg, D. S. (1998). Developmental Indicators for the Assessment of Learning (Third Edition). Circle Pines, MN: American Guidance Services.

Summary
The DIAL-3 is a norm-referenced screening instrument. It is meant to identify young children (ages 3 to 6 years, 11 months) at-risk or with delays in one or more of the following five developmental areas: cognitive/basic concepts, language, motor, self-help, and social-emotional. The DIAL-3 is available in English and Spanish versions.

DIAL-3 was normed in Spanish as well as English. It is not a translated test and the development of the Spanish edition is included in the manual with statistics for sample distributions for both English and Spanish. The final determinations of cut scores are included as well.

DIAL-3 tasks are individually administered, and a parent questionnaire is also completed at the time of the screening. Nine behaviors are also observed during the testing session, including how willingly the child participates in testing and how well the child pays attention to the tasks. This instrument can be administered in a variety of settings, including schools, pediatric offices, and homes. Administration time is approximately 30 minutes. A condensed version, the Speed DIAL, can be administered in 15 minutes.

A screening team, including members from early childhood special education, early childhood education, paraprofessionals, and speech and language pathology, is recommended for administering, scoring, and interpreting the DIAL-3 scores. Standardized administration instructions are included in the DIAL-3 manual. Information about materials for training workshops are also provided.
