Vineland Social-Emotional Early Childhood Scales (SEEC)

Sparrow, S.S., Balla, D.A., & Cicchetti, D.V. (1998). Vineland Social-Emotional Early Childhood Scales (SEEC). Circle Pines, MN: American Guidance Service.

Summary
This instrument is developed from the Vineland Adaptive Behavior Scales. It is a standardized, norm-referenced evaluation tool for children from birth to age six. Through the interview with the parent or caregiver who is most familiar with the child's social-emotional behavior, this instrument helps to assess the young child's social and emotional function. It is available in English only.

The instrument assesses social and emotional function, examining the child's world of feelings and relationships and documenting how he or she interacts in the home and external environment. For example: skills of paying attention, entering into intentional social interactions, and developing self-regulating behaviors are looked at.

The instrument is used to interview the adult who is most familiar with the child's social-emotional behavior.Norms were developed from 1200 individuals aged birth through 5 years 11 months who were part of the national standardization sample in the United States of America. Chronological age, gender, geographic region, parent education, race or ethnic group, and community size were considered during the standardization and norm development processes.

Professionals with a graduate degree and specific training and experience in early childhood individual assessment and test interpretation may administer, score, and interpret the Vineland SEEC Scales.
