Summary
Early Screening Inventory - Revised (ESI-R) is a brief developmental screening instrument that is individually administered to children 3-6 years of age. It is designed to identify children who may need special educational services in order to perform successfully in school.
Because 3-4 ½ year old children differ from children aged 4 ½ to 6 years in a number of critical areas of development, this revised version includes two forms that are sensitive to the differences between these age groups. The preschool version (ESI-P) is intended to be used from the child's third birthday until the child becomes four and one-half years old, after which the kindergarten version (ESI-K) is appropriate. A Spanish language version of the ESI-R is available separately. Intertester reliability and test-retest reliability measures are high on the ESI-R, as are short- and long-term validity coefficients. A Parent Questionnaire is included in an appendix.
The ESI-R samples performance in several areas of development: speech, language, cognition, perception, and fine and gross motor coordination. The items selected for the ESI-R primarily sample the domain of developmental tasks, rather than the domain of specific accomplishments that indicate academic readiness. It surveys the child's ability to acquire skills, not the current level of skill achievement and performance. The test has three areas: visual-motor/adaptive, language and cognition, and gross motor. All three areas are designed to investigate a child's abilities within a particular area, but screening recommendations are based on the total score.
The manual provides general screening guidelines, directions for administering and scoring the ESI-P and ESI-K, differences in administers and scoring the ESI-P and ESI-K, interpretation of test results, and standardization, reliability, and validity of the test. Test materials such as blocks and picture cards are included, as are the parent questionnaire and score sheets.
